With so much gratitude, I would like to express a very special word of thanks first of all to my parents, who have supported me all along from the very beginning of my studies, and to every person who became a big part for me to complete this on-the-job training.
As much gratefulness is I full-heartedly express for my professors, who had passed me to qualify for an OJT; to the STRINGS Computers and Technologies Paniqui Branch staffs namely, Ma’am Catherine Orduña, the branch manager, Sir Marzen Marquez, Sir Harold Paul Obcena, and Sir Carlito Gacusan, the branch’s resident technicians, who treated us as their own staffs while doing the OJT in their store and never demonstrated us any form of grudge in sharing their ideas and resources; and to my OJT partner, Mary Antonette Patricio, whom I had shared with every blissful moment of learning new things throughout the OJT period.
The sincerest thankfulness for our almighty Father for endowing me such a great opportunity to have this meaningful experience that allowed me to gain so much knowledge which are fundamental for my future ventures.
On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a cliché that sums up the thought that there is no replacement to the experiences gained from the job, thing that is supported by the educators and laymen alike who are recognizing the significance of learning by doing.
Basing to this principle, the manager and the technicians of STRINGS Computers and Technologies incorporated demonstrations and explanations, performance of tasks under supervision, and provision of appropriate feedbacks to the on-the-job trainees’ activities.
Doing OJT in STRINGS trains the students and develops their skills and knowledge, as well as their personality. It also lets them experience the real thing that happen in the actual working environment. The manager and the technicians guide the students in learning something new that they do not learn from the school while they are completing their required hours which helps them improve their working abilities and skills, so as with their effectiveness and efficiency in work.
Social activity of the students are as well boosted up by STRINGS by allowing them to communicate with the clients and letting them improvise their own strategies in marketing the stores’ products and through sending them out to assist clients concerns.
· Apply the knowledge and skills gained from the school.
· Expand the knowledge and skills from the experiences on the job.
· Improve the working effectiveness and efficiency according to the working environment’s requirements.
· Enhance personality especially on dealing with the other employees and staffs of the working area.
· Develop strategies in contributing for the growth of the working area.
· Acquire the company personnel’s trust.
Division of Works by week
First Week (April 19, 2010 – April 26, 2010)
In the first day, the trainees were introduced by the manager, who interviewed and accepted their applications in the previous week, to the other two personnel in the store, the resident technicians. Every one was very welcoming and wears gestures that guaranteed joyful working vicinity with them.
Decorating the whole store to adapt it with the summer season began the first week job. Some artistic skills were applied in creating a summer ambiance inside the store out of the simple materials that were present.
Assembling computer tables and chairs were also taught to the trainees, which had been applied throughout the OJT period. Some costumer-oriented skills were also employed while assisting walk in clients.
Working-out on adjusting with the changing working environment was also a good point of improvement for the trainees. Basics in CPU assembling and installation of software were also learned early in this week. One of the good employee’s characteristics is “flexibility” or being able to do different type of jobs efficiently, though those are out of their fields, essential thing that was added to the trainees’ learning in this week.
Having the instinct of common sense must also be observed particularly in maintaining the neatness of the working area and the items themselves.
Second Week (April 27, 2010 - May 4, 2010)
The second week was merely the implementations of everything that have been learned in the first week, plus the additional continuous feeding-in knowledge and experiences. The manager has closed a big sale through telemarketing and it opened an opportunity to the trainees to make use of the knowledge they acquired from the previous week by assembling twenty-five CPUs.
Initiatives and smart strategies were drawn out inside the trainees when actual troubles popped out while working. Potential revenue was added into the store’s sale when the stocked items, which were good for disposals, were converted by the trainees into functional item by combining their good parts altogether.
Written and actual examinations were given in this week. The examinations intended to improve the selling techniques being employed by the trainees to the actual clients. The situational test evaluated the impromptu skills the trainees have and were even improved as the feedbacks and suggestions were given out afterwards.
Working seriously does not necessarily mean that it has to be done working seriously in a quiet way. The STRINGS staffs observe the spirit of family every time. There are always chances for joyful moments even right in front of the clients while respect and professionalism are still carried out, thing that is not difficult to learn since it comes out naturally provided that every person around jives in harmoniously. Different costumer behaviors somehow must be given consideration in this matter.
Third Week (May 5, 2010 – May 14, 2010)
Working under a little complex started the job for this week. Inventories will be checked by the personnel from the main branch so making sure that every thing is ready for them when they arrive consumed this week’s first few days, busily.
It is flattering to know that the trust of the personnel in the store is already on the trainees. Entrusted to do the manager’s presentation for business-related transactions and as marketing tool, means so much for an on-the-job trainee. Being asked to deposit the store’s revenue to the bank, asked to accompany a client to his office for some technical assistance alone, and to do the formatting-installation job to a client’s unit, are evident signs of achieving the objective of which is to obtain the store personnel’s reliance on the trainees.
Utilizing the experiences gained in the previous weeks still took place up to this week. The aim to push the boundaries of the trainees’ limitation was what drove them to dare insisting for taking chances. Assembling CPUs up to its most sensitive parts gave the trainees a real daunting yet teaching experience.
Fourth Week (May 15, 2010 – May 30, 2010)
Multitasking is a knowledge the students learned in the school and that is putted into operation while doing some works in the store in this week. While performing the task assigned, the trainees find a way to learn and gain experiences at the same time. Should it be from the simplest matter of exploiting the latest Microsoft Office, the 2010 version, while asked to encode a document by the manager, or up to the intricate matter of having double time in sorting new items by type for the expected inventories in that week, while assisting walk in clients wearing appealing gestures and faces despite the fact of being worn-out.
Some skills gained from school were at the same time being employed and enriched like crimping RJ-45 to UTP cables bought buy the costumers, and simply providing satisfying costumer service, thing that has learned from Networking and Quality Consciousness subjects, respectively.
Another informal capability test was given to the trainees in this week in the form of reformatting-installation job with an entirely new CPU components compare to what they have done in the store before. Mistakes became a good source of learning in this point, aside from the additional assistance from the personnel and self-exploration.
While the technicians were on the outdoor servicing, the trainees have practiced the knowledge they gained from them when the branch manager admitted a technical-assistance job from the walk in client. Good to see then that that test went well and the service the trainees provided was paid with the real technician’s rate.
The formatting-installation skills of the trainees were even furthered as they finished a personal computer unit one of trainees brought to the store.
Work Experience and Values Learned
“Learning by doing”, this is the on-the-job training mainly strives for. This, as well, is the preeminent thing the students have taken advantage of from the company they applied in of which is the STRINGS Computers and Technologies, which never failed the students’ belief that there is where they could gain the necessary learning from an OJT.
The STRINGS personnel, particularly the manager taught the students more than just about the technical skills but furthermore in developing the appropriate attitude in providing service to the clients. The manager has demonstrated some example of ways how to deal with different type of costumer behaviors. The manager, also, shared her inspiring previous experiences in the jobs to serve as guides in taking the students’ path to success in their prospective quests.
The technicians of the store are vey benevolent in sharing their knowledge and skills to the students. They have that positive belief that accepting OJTs is having a responsibility of molding them into better beings as they came out from the working area. The technicians became good teachers when it comes to CPU components assembling, software and OS installations, and computer manipulations.
Examinations were given formally and informally to measure the students skills and knowledge. A good way for them to identify the students doors of improvements and points of appreciations. They allowed the trainees to experience the real life works in a job like assisting clients concerns should it be in the store itself or even outside. Allowing the trainees to interact with the clients is one way of their tests too, which improves the trainees’ confidence.
The store’s personnel have divulged the trainees that the secret to a happy job is maintaining the spirit of family in the working area between the personnel themselves and with the clients. They always share even the simplest fun they discover in the internet if they know it will bring big happiness for every one having something to laugh about. Each of the personnel possesses their naturally different sense of humor which keeps the working area away from getting boring despite the fact of their very little number.
On the other hand, the personnel observe professionalism and respect to each other and to every client, all the time even though they maintain drollness in communicating.
All of these and the learning of the students from the school combined probably made them absolutely maturely different persons that have increased their self esteems to brace them in taking chances ahead.
